A local artist, I feel very connected to Scurlock's concepts in her pieces. My favorite of her works include her contrasting elements with her trees in her most recent works, shown in this image. The majority of her pieces consist of the simplicity of nature, with the basic and abstract structures of trees. Her process is greatly affected by the materials that she uses, which mostly includes oil paint on paper, with the occasional use of wax. As an artist, I hope to tie in her technical elements in my uses of nature. However, I plan on being less conceptual than she is by using more symbolism and brighter colors to create a more cheerful vibe than she does. Regardless of her dark colors, the movement found in her trees creates a whimsical element that is very lighthearted.
