In my three works I wanted to encompass some of the past techniques that I experimented with during my works in Art IV; however, I wanted to stray away from some of the concepts I used. Instead, I worked with more concepts that portrayed a more free spirit and fun theme. As show in my first work, feathers symbolize to me the lightness and wispy attitude of the summer. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate some of my painting skills with the highlights and dark shadows shown on the individual wisps of the feathers. In my second work, I brought in my past technique of geometric design with two dream catchers. I really enjoyed creating this piece because I got to focus a lot on space, color, and structure of my shapes. Similarly in my third piece I continued to carry out my theme of light- hearted concepts with a stylized version of an owl. This piece was overall my favorite and I hope to use the concept of stylized figures within my next works in this class. The idea of nature has always been a major motivator in my work; I hope to continue with some animals in my work because it is something that I have never really experimented with.
The process I took in making these works were very sporadic. I created each of the pieces during separate times of the summer. Each represents something that I was feeling during a certain time period. Some of the difficulties that I faced included the material that I painted on. Because of its porous qualities, it was difficult to get the paint to stay vibrant on the cork. After many layers of paint, the colors finally became vibrant. This provided me with the plans to work on smoother surfaces so that I can have tighter lines and more sophisticated work.
If I had to give myself a letter grade I would give myself a B because I know that I have a lot of potential to improve. I also know that some of my lines are not as tight as they should be. However, this work has given me many ideas for my future pieces and I plan to base the stylization aspects into my newest work. I know that this work is “hang ready” and I am very excited for where my work will go from here.
